Nikaido House
The Nikaido House is an Edo Period residence thought to have been built around 1810. It features two rooms with thatched roofs, one used to receive guests (“omote”) and one for daily living (“nakae”) which includes a traditional hearth and kitchen. The rooms are joined at their corners, a unique characteristic of southern Kyushu architecture at the time, and the building was designated an important cultural property in 1975. It is also the birthplace of politician Susumu Nikaido (1909-2000), who played an important role in the normalization of Sino-Japanese relations after WWII.
